The Smart Toy Awards recognize ethical and responsible toys that use AI to create an innovative and healthy play experience for children.




The Smart Toy Awards have developed governance criteria for smart toys to help companies design products that are not only fun but also ethical, responsible, and good for children.

If you're a company that produces smart toys, learn more and apply for the Smart Toy Awards on our application page hosted by XPRIZE. Apply by April 9, 2021. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, so please consider applying early.


Our judges come from around the world and across sectors and industries. They include experts in children's rights, computer science, AI, robotics, education, medicine, and developmental science.

Grammy Award winning artist, AI entrepreneur, and philanthropist will.i.am chairs the Judges Committee.


will.i.am is a multi-faceted creative innovator across music, television and film, a Futurist, a tech entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Henrietta Fore

Henrietta Fore is Executive Director of UNICEF. She has worked to champion economic development, education, health, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief in public service, private sector, and non-profit leadership. She was the first woman to serve as Administrator of the USAID and Director of US Foreign Assistance.

Dr. Ron Dahl

Dr. Ron Dahl is a pediatrician and developmental scientist studying children and adolescents. He serves as the Director of the Institute of Human Development and Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California Berkeley. Ron is also the Founding Director of the Center for the Developing Adolescent.

Dr. Rose Luckin

Dr. Rose Luckin is a Professor at UCL’s Knowledge Lab specializing in AI’s application to education and training. She is also CEO and Founder of EDUCATE Ventures and co-founded the Institute for Ethical AI in Education.

Charles-Edouard Bouée

Charles-Edouard Bouée is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Alpha Intelligence Capital (AIC), which invests in deep algorithmic science-based AI companies globally.  He is the former global CEO of Roland Berger, the global consulting firm, and has authored numerous books on Artificial Intelligence, management, and China.

Andria Zafirakou, MBE

Andria Zafirakou, MBE is a teacher at Alperton Community School in London. She is the winner of the 2018 Global Teacher Prize and founder of the charity, Artists in Residence.

Dr. Matthew Studley

Dr. Matthew Studley is a senior member of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, where his interests span the ethics of robotics, evolutionary swarm robotics, haptic feedback, and teleoperation. As leader of the EU ‘SciRoc’ project, he leads the European Robotics League.

Kay Firth-Butterfield

Kay Firth-Butterfield is Head of AI/ML at the World Economic Forum and a member of the Executive Committee. She is a barrister, former judge, and professor specializing in AI ethics and human rights. Kay also served as the first Chief AI Ethics Officer in the world.


The inaugural Smart Toy Awards show will be held virtually and livestreamed on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 11:00 am PDT.
